Dire che Robert Pattinson abbia riempito il suo calendario Post-Twilight con film ambiziosi sarebbe un eufemismo. Questo weekend porta la sua odissea di viaggio nel film di Cronemberg Cosmopolis, e negli ultimi mesi e settimane l’attore ha firmato per un pugno di film interessanti, che includono “Mission: Blacklist”  sulla caccia a  Saddam Hussein , il  racconto storico  di Werner Herzog  ”Queen of the Desert, e  ” ”The Rover. di David Michôd. Ci siamo incontrati con Pattinson  durante il suo giro di promozione con la stampa per “Cosmopolis”,  e lui  ha saziato la nostra curiosità rispetto a ciò che il regista Michôd  sta preparando dopo il suo  film drammatico “Animal Kingdom”.  Programmato per essere girato l’anno prossimo, “The Rover” vanta alcune idee abbastanza grandi alla base della sua apparentemente semplice impostazione. “E ‘una specie di  western,” Pattinson ha spiegato. “E ‘molto esistenziale.’ Davvero interessante. Non riesco a spiegarvi bene di cosa si tratta,  ma  riguarda quanto dolore si possa sopportare al mondo  e quanto  (si possa sopportare) disgusto e crudeltà prima che l’amore muoia. Penso  sia un modo per dire di cosa si tratta . ” (Cronenberg, che è nella stanza, interviene :”Sembra bello pesante!”)

Pattinson sarà co-protagonista nel film con Guy Pearce,   in un set ambientato in un futuro prossimo incentrato su un uomo che viaggia attraverso l’outback australiano  per  trovare la sua auto rubata, che contiene qualcosa di prezioso per lui. Tuttavia, Pattinson ammette che forse la sua descrizione potrebbe essere un po ‘più ampollsa del film vero e proprio. “David Michôd  leggerà questo e mi dirà :”Ma  di che ca****o stai parlando? Si tratta di un film poliziesco,’” dice Pattinson con una risata.

Per quanto riguarda  quando Mission Blacklist uscirà, Pattinson ha ammesso che è più tardi di quanto lui avrebbe originariamente voluto. ” Avrei voluto girare questo autunno,” ha detto. “Avrei dovuto fare questo film questo autunno, ma  è stato spostato  a dopo ‘The Rover’, che è una buona cosa, perché ha bisogno di un sacco di lavoro. David Cronenberg “Cosmopolis” apre a New York e Los Angeles  oggi. E ‘una delle esperienze più genuinamente cinematograficamente strane che abbiamo avuto quest’anno (e intendiamo dire che in senso buono). Abbiamo avuto modo di parlare con Cronenberg e il suo uomo  leader  Robert Pattinson, che interpreta nel film un giovane milionario  anaffettivo che si aggira per New York in una limousine, schivando un potenziale assassino, incontrando colleghi di lavoro diversi, e parlando all’infinito della sua situazione esistenziale  in mezzo ad uno sconvolgimento economico. Abbiamo chiacchierato con Cronenberg a proposito di come il progetto è  nato ,  come è stato girare in digitale, e molto altro ancora.
Cronenberg ha detto che “Cosmopolis” è venuto a lui dal produttore portoghese Paulo Branco*, che ha avuto l’idea di adattare il romanzo di Don DeLillo dallo stesso titolo. Cronenberg ha scritto la sceneggiatura in modo rapido, con un unico obiettivo in mente: mantenere la prosa distintiva di DeLillo. “Il dialogo di Don in tutti i suoi libri è fantastico – molto stilizzato, come Harold Pinter,” ha spiegato Cronenberg. “Pinter è un drammaturgo e perciò è possibile udire in teatro il suo dialogo, proprio come David Mamet. Ma non avevo mai sentito in scena il dialogo di DeLillo: ‘Ok, voglio davvero  avere alcuni attori favolosi che leggano queste righe. Voglio vedere cosa succede con questo (materiale) ‘”.

Quando è  arrivato al casting, Cronenberg  si è dovuto porre alcune domande essenziali: “Quanti anni ha questo  personaggio .Quanti anni  hanno gli attori in giro, Quanti di questi possono riprodurre l’accento di New York, anche se non sono da quelle parti? Quale è la star che ha la potenza di farti finanziare, che è sempre un problema? ” Infine, il regista ha deciso per  Pattinson, meglio conosciuto per il suo ruolo di vampiro Edward Cullen nell’insanamente popolare serie di  ”Twilight”. Anche con l’appeal considerevole di Cronenberg, gli ci  è voluto un pò per ottenere che Pattinson si legasse al  progetto. Dieci giorni, per l’esattezza.
“Improvvisamente mi resi conto non avevo alcuna idea di come farlo”, ha detto Pattinson, che sembra un po ‘in imbarazzo per l’intero episodio. “Sapevo che era davvero valido, ma avevo il terrore anche di chiamare.  Gli attori sono sempre addestrati alle stronzate, anche se le odiano. E non avevo niente da dire, per niente. Poichè  David aveva fatto la sceneggiatura sapeva, ovviamente, di cosa si trattava. Per fortuna  la conversazione non è accaduta, soprattutto perché Cronenberg ha assicurato a  Pattinson  che era “assolutamente la persona giusta” per il ruolo. E con Pattinson, il film ha avuto una possibilità reale  di combattere per essere realizzato (con un progetto di minore box office, questo sarebbe stato più o meno una cosa impossibile). “Beh, era certamente una grande emozione essere in grado di aiutarlo a ottenere che venisse fatto … Soprattutto un film come questo”, ha detto Pattinson. L’attore ha detto che Cronenberg era così leggendario per lui  che Pattinson non era nemmeno sicuro che  stesse ancora facendo film :  ”E ‘uno di quei registi in cui non lo pensi nemmeno a livello di ipotesi di poter lavorare con lui:: non ti dici: Oh si. Ho molta voglia di lavorare con lui. ‘” A questo punto Pattinson si rivolge  a Cronenberg in modo affettuoso e dice : “Tu hai un aggettivo tutto tuo!” Al che Cronenberg esclama (con una specie di gioia infantilizzata): “Cronenberghiano”  ! Pattinson poi continua : “È un po ‘cambiata la mia intera percezione di con chi posso lavorare . Ci sono persone che sono cresciuto guardando che sono talmente parte del linguaggio cinematografico che non ci si rende nemmeno conto che fanno ancora film.. ” Cronenberg poi  aggiunge:  ”Che sono ancora vivi. E’ quello che sta cercando di dire!”.

Qualunque film  Cronenberg finisca per girare come prossimo,  vorrebbe che  Pattinson ne facesse parte  (si aggregasse al suo lungo viaggio). “Abbiamo passato insieme un ottimo periodo e sappiamo solo che potremmo fare qualcosa di veramente forte insieme”, ha detto Cronenberg,  facendo notare che la lunga gestazione di Map to the Stars dallo script di  Bruce Wagner  ”potrebbe essere” uno di quei progetti. “Noi non sappiamo  ancora quale sarà. Quindi, se avete qualche idea, vi preghiamo di farcelo sapere.”

Robert Pattinson Says David Michôd’s ‘The Rover’ Is Like An Existential Western

To say that Robert Pattinson has been filling his post-”Twilight” calendar with ambitious films would be an understatement. This weekend brings his trippy David Cronenberg odyssey “Cosmopolis,” and over the past few weeks and months, the actor has signed on to a handful of interesting films, including ”Mission: Blacklist” about the hunt for Saddam Hussein, Werner Herzog’s historical tale “Queen of the Desert” and “Animal Kingdom” director David Michôd’s “The Rover.” And it’s the latter about which the actor has shared some tantalizing details.

Catching up with Pattinson as he did press rounds for “Cosmopolis,” he filled us in on what we might expect from Michôd’s follow-up to his crime drama “Animal Kingdom.” Set to shoot next year, “The Rover” boasts some pretty big ideas behind its deceptively simple set up. “It’s a kind of a western,” Pattinson explained. “It’s very existential. It’s really interesting. I couldn’t really explain to you what it’s about but it’s sort of about how much pain can the world take and how much disgust and cruelty before love dies. I think that’s kind of what it’s about.” (Cronenberg, who was in the room, chimed in with: ” That sounds pretty heavy!”)
Pattinson will co-star in the film with Guy Pearce, with the near-future-set story centering on a man who journeys across the Australian outback to find his stolen car, which contains something invaluable to him. However, Pattinson admits that perhaps his description might be a little more highfalutin than the actual movie. “David Michôd’s going to read this and be like ‘What the fuck are you talking about? It’s a crime movie,’ ” he said with a laugh.

As for when “The Rover” is coming out, Pattinson admitted it is later than he originally wanted. “I wish it was shooting this fall,” he said. “I was supposed to be doing this movie this fall but that was pushed to after ‘The Rover,’ which is a good thing because it needs a ton of work. But I really wish I could move ‘The Rover’ up. I’ve got to find something else to do.”

Robert Pattinson Says He Was “Terrified” To Star In ‘Cosmopolis’; David Cronenberg Says Digital Is Better Than Film (excrept)

David Cronenberg‘s “Cosmopolis” opens in New York and Los Angeles today. It’s one of the most genuinely weird cinematic experiences we’ve had this year (and we mean that in a good way). We got to talk to Cronenberg and his leading man Robert Pattinson, who stars in the film as a disaffected young millionaire who prowls New York City in a limousine, dodging a potential assassin, meeting various business associates, and talking endlessly about his existential plight in the midst of economic upheaval. We chatted with Cronenberg about how the project came to be, what it was like to shoot digitally, and much more.

Cronenberg said that “Cosmopolis” came to him from Portuguese producer Paul Blanco, who had the idea for adapting the Don DeLillo novel of the same name. Cronenberg wrote the script quickly, with a single goal in mind: retaining DeLillo’s distinctive prose. “Don’s dialogue in all his books is fantastic – very stylized, likeHarold Pinter,” Cronenberg explained. “Pinter is a playwright and you hear his dialogue spoken, just like David Mamet. But I had never heard DeLillo’s dialogue spoken so I thought, ‘Okay, I really want some fabulous actors saying these lines. I want to see what happens with that.’”
When it came down to casting, Cronenberg had to ask some essential questions: “How old is this character? How old are the actors around? Who can do the New York accent even if they’re not from around there? Who has the star power to get you financing, which is always an issue?” Finally the director decided on Pattinson, best known for his role as vampire Edward Cullen in the insanely popular “Twilight” series. Even with Cronenberg’s considerable cache, it took him a while to sell Pattinson on the project. Ten days, to be exact.

“I suddenly realized I had no idea how to do it at all,” Pattinson said, seeming slightly embarrassed about the whole episode. “I knew it was really good but I was terrified of even calling. Actors are always trained to bullshit, even if you hate something. And I had nothing to say, at all. Because David did the script he obviously knows what it’s about. As soon as I said, ‘I don’t know what it’s about,’ and he said, ‘Me neither.’” And while that was reassuring to the actor, it wasn’t the end. “Then I spent a week trying to figure out how to get out of it, where I got to the point where I was going to have to call up and say, ‘I’m too scared because I don’t think I’m a good enough actor and I’m a pussy.’ I didn’t want to have that conversation.”

Thankfully that conversation didn’t happen, mostly because Cronenberg assured Pattinson that he was “absolutely the right person” for the role. And with Pattinson, the movie had an actual fighting chance of getting made (with a lesser box office draw, this would have been more or less an impossibility). “Well it was certainly a thrill to be able to help it get made… Especially one like this,” Pattinson said. The actor said that Cronenberg was so legendary that Pattinson wasn’t even sure he was still making movies. “He’s one of those directors where he’s not even on a level of ‘Oh yeah I really want to work with him.’” That’s when Pattinson turned to Cronenberg and lovingly said, “You have an adjective!” To which Cronenberg exclaimed (with a kind of demented glee): “Cronenbergian!” Pattinson then continued: “It’s kind of changed my whole perception of who I can work with. There are people who I grew up watching who are so part of the film language that you don’t even realize that they’re still making movies.” Cronenberg then shot back: “That they’re still alive! Which is what he’s trying to say.”

Whatever Cronenberg ends up shooting next, he would like Pattinson to come along for the ride. “We had a great time and we just know we could do something really cool together,” Cronenberg said, noting that the long-gestating Bruce Wagner project “Map to the Stars” “could be” one of those projects. “We just don’t know what it is.
