Per un ragazzo così apparentemente  distrutto rispetto alla sua vita sentimentale, Robert Pattinson sembrava essere in uno stato d’animo abbastanza buono.

Lui e il regista David Cronenberg hanno parlato di recente del loro nuovo film, “Cosmopolis”, che apre Venerdì 24 Agosto. Basato su un romanzo di Don DeLillo,  segue il  miliardario asset manager Eric Packer  (Pattinson) mentre cerca di farsi strada in limousine in tutta Manhattan per ottenere un taglio di capelli. Il film è pieno di immagini di disordini, e folle arrabbiate,  che riecheggia il movimento Occupy Wall Street (anche se libro di DeLillo è stato pubblicato nove anni fa).

Pattinson è stato a lungo cibo per i tabloid, ma le recenti notizie che la sua  coprotagonista e  compagna “Twilight”  Kristen Stewart  lo ha tradito lo hanno spinto ancora di più sotto i riflettori. Egli non ha  parlato della “rottura” in particolare, ma Pattinson (e Cronenberg) hanno parlato della “fama” in modo generale (nell’intervista che segue).

La telefonata inizia con Pattinson e Cronenberg che ridono.
Domanda: Sembra che voi due non abbiate alcuna difficoltà divertirvi.

Pattinson: Siamo spensierati e ce la spassiamo. Non abbiamo alcun problema.

D: E Robert, non hai fatto abbastanza notizia ultimamente?.

Pattinson: Eh.

D: Il tuo personaggio è un ragazzo disconnesso che tenta di connettersi. O forse è il contrario. Come lo interpreti?

Pattinson: Penso che sia molto, molto ossessionato da se stesso. Affonda sempre più in questa ossessione fino ad implodere .Anche solo con le parole. Sembrava fatto apposta per me. E’ stato come se sapessi istintivamente cosa fare fin dall’inizio, perché la sceneggiatura era veramente buona.

D: E ‘difficile dirigere qualcuno direttamente che si sottopone ad un esame della prostata (come Packer fa nel film)?

Cronenberg: Per me? Oh, nessun problema.

D: Robert, presumo che sei ricco. Ma Packer è incredibilmente ricco. C’è una libertà in questo?

Pattinson: Penso che sia in realtà un modo abbastanza difficile di vivere. Ho incontrato alcune persone ricche in modo romanzesco (ride). Se hai interesse in qualcosa al mondo, è molto difficile da capire. Vedi le cose in modo molto diverso dalla maggior parte delle persone . Il denaro fa davvero cambiare le persone. Credo che bisogna fare uno sforzo per essere normali.

D: Ci sei passato quando sei diventato famoso?

Pattinson: E ‘diverso. Gestire la fama è diverso. Ti tirano addosso di tutto e devi capire come affrontarlo.
D: Siete al centro di molta pubblicità in questo momento, buona e cattiva. Probabilmente siete in una bolla durante le riprese del film, così che non molte persone riuscivano ad essere aggiornate .

Cronenberg: In realtà, un sacco di “Twilighters” hanno tenuto il passo . Hanno fatto siti web, avevano telecamere nascoste. Ma tutto questo era davvero molto dolce. E ‘stato molto dolce e molto affettuoso, e c’erano queste ragazze giovani che non avevano letto mai altro che “Harry Potter” e “Twilight” , ma leggevano “Cosmopolis”, si leggevano Don DeLillo e scrivevano sui loro blog .

D: Robert, “Twilight” è agli sgoccioli. Come l’hai vissuto?

Pattinson: E’ stato pazzesco (ride). Nessuno mi crede mai, ma nessuno di quelli coinvolti con il primo film aveva idea che sarebbe stato quello poi si è rivelato. Noi non sapevamo nemmeno se ci sarebbe stato un sequel. Stai su questo treno in corsa e sei del tutto impreparato. E allo stesso tempo cercavo di capire se volevo fare l’attore o meno, il che è interessante. Hai vent’anni, e stai cercando di capire cosa vuoi fare della tua vita.

D: E dal punto di vista del successo che ti ha dato? Non è un tipo di vita strano? Non si può nemmeno attraversare la strada senza che qualcuno ti scatti una foto.

Pattinson: Sì. il problema è come gestire tutto questo. Ognuno deve capire come vuole vivere. E ‘una sfida.

Cronenberg: Posso dire che Rob era sicuramente in grado di attraversare la strada a Toronto (dove “Cosmopolis” è stato girato) e nessuno lo notava. E poteva entrare in un bar e andare in un ristorante. In realtà, una parte di tutto questo ha a che fare con dove sei e quanto ti stai pubblicizzando. Se sei Lindsay Lohan e il gioco è fare in modo che tutti sappiano dove sei in ogni momento, poi si sa come andrà a finire. Ma se non è questo quello che vuoi, il sistema c’è.

For a guy so supposedly broken up about his love life, Robert Pattinson seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

He and director David Cronenberg spoke recently about their new film, “Cosmopolis,” which opens Friday, Aug. 24. Based on a Don DeLillo novel, it follows billionaire asset manager Eric Packer (Pattinson) as he tries to make his way by limo across Manhattan to get a haircut. The movie is filled with images of angry crowds rioting, echoing the Occupy Wall Street movement (even though DeLillo’s book was published nine years ago).

Pattinson has long been tabloid fodder, but recent reports that his “Twilight” co-star and romantic partner Kristen Stewart cheated on him have thrust him even further into the spotlight. He didn’t address the breakup specifically, but Pattinson (and Cronenberg) did talk about fame in a general fashion.

The phone call began with Pattinson and Cronenberg laughing.

Question: Sounds like you two aren’t having any trouble having fun.

Pattinson: We rollick and frolic. We have no problem.

Q: And Robert, you haven’t been in the news enough lately.

Pattinson: Heh.

Q: Your character is a disconnected guy trying to connect. Or maybe it’s the other way around. How do you play that?

Pattinson: I think he’s just very, very self-obsessed. It’s going deeper and deeper into self-obsession until it kind of implodes. It’s also just the words. Everything is done for me. I sort of instinctively felt like I knew what to do from the beginning because the script was so good.

Q: Is it tricky to direct someone having a prostate exam (as Packer does in the film)?

Cronenberg: For me? Oh, no problem.

Q: Robert, I assume you’re rich. But Packer is incredibly rich. Is there a freedom to that?

A: I think it’s actually quite a difficult way to live. I’ve met a few people who have fictional money (laughing). If you have any interest in the world, it’s very difficult to see. Your eyes are totally different to most people. Money really does change people. You have to make an effort to be normal, I think.

Q: Did you go through that when you became successful?

Pattinson: It’s different. Dealing with fame is different. Everyone gets stuff thrown at them in life, and you have to figure out how to deal with it.

Q: There’s a ton of publicity surrounding you now, good and bad. Presumably you’re in a bubble while shooting the film, so not as many people are keeping up.

Cronenberg: In fact, a lot of the “Twilight” fans were keeping up. They made websites, and they had spy-cams. But all of that was really quite sweet. It was quite gentle and quite affectionate, and you had these young girls who had never read anything but “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” before (but) were reading “Cosmopolis,” they were reading Don DeLillo and writing about it on their blogs.

Q: Robert, “Twilight” is winding down. What has that been like?

Pattinson: Pretty crazy (laughing). No one ever believes me, but no one involved with the first movie had any idea that it was going to turn out to be what it was going to be. We didn’t even know if we were going to make the sequels. You go on this runaway train that I was entirely unprepared for. And at the same time, I was kind of figuring out whether I wanted to be an actor or not, which is kind of interesting. You’re in your 20s, you’re trying to figure out what you want to do with your life.

Q: What about the fame aspect of it? Isn’t that kind of a weird way of life? You can’t even walk across the street without someone taking a picture.

Pattinson: Yeah. It’s just how you deal with it. Everyone has to figure out how they want to live. It’s a challenge.

Cronenberg: I can say that Rob was definitely able to walk across the street in Toronto (where “Cosmopolis” was shot) and no one noticed. And he could go to a bar and he could go to a restaurant. Really, part of it has to do with where you are and how much you’re publicizing yourself. If you’re Lindsay Lohan and you’re making sure that everybody knows where you are at all times, then you know what the consequences will be. But if somebody doesn’t want that, there are ways you can do that.
