L’ho visto e mi è piaciuto. Di solito non mi piace la mia roba, ma io in realtà non mi riconosco più.

Come ha fatto David Cronenberg a dirigere la tua performance?

In realtà abbiamo iniziato entrambi non sapendo esattamente di cosa si trattasse, ma sapendo che era interessante. Stavo cercando di prepararmi , ma il momento migliore [durante le riprese] era quando non sapevi quello che facevi. David ha sempre avuto quest’inquietante percezione, quando io non sapevo nemmeno cosa stessi facendo e alla fine era sempre la ripresa che gli piaceva di più.

David mi aveva detto che la ripresa sarebbe stata tra le mie gambe. Sapeva che ero un giovane attore apparentemente disposto a fare qualsiasi cosa per il lavoro. Mi disse, “Voglio girarla … e riprendere in primo piano solo il contorno con le palle in alto.” Io sinceramente gli avevo creduto e sono dovuto andare alla sua roulotte per dirgli: “Non so se posso farlo …”

Il fatto che il film sia andato a Cannes è stata una conferma per te?

È incredibile. Ero così terrorizzato di farlo all’inizio che per un momento ho pensato che avrei mandato tutto a farsi fottere e chiunque avrebbe detto “Cronenberg è esaurito …” così, portarlo a Cannes è stata la cosa più bella in assoluto. Ottenere di fare questo film, portarlo a Cannes e ottenere di fare l’altro film che ho recentemente ottenuto sono stati i tre momenti più felici della mia vita.

Parlando del prossimo film …

Sto per fare Mission: Blacklist con Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire che aveva diretto Johnny Mad Dog. Speriamo che si giri in Iraq, così sarà divertente. Poi farò The Rover con David Michôd [di Animal Kingdom ].

E Breaking Dawn: Part 2 – cosa possono aspettarsi i fan?

Si tratta di un film più divertente rispetto agli altri. Penso che Bill [Condon, regista] sia riuscito davvero a catturarne l’assurdità .

Sarà un sollievo non tornare più ad essere Edward Cullen?

Un sollievo non dovermi rimettere le lenti a contatto! E ‘stato assolutamente orribile avere quelle cose stupide negli occhi. Anche se mi dicessero: “Ti daremo un miliardo di dollari per farlo ancora,” non so se lo vorrei fare !

How did David Cronenberg guide your performance?
We both started out not really knowing exactly what it was about but knowing it was interesting. I was trying to prepare for it, but the time it felt most right [while filming] was when you didn’t know what you were doing. David had this uncanny sense of seeing when I didn’t know what I was doing and that was always the take that he liked.

There’s a scene where you have an anal examination…
David told me that the shot was going to be from between my legs. He knew I was a young actor trying to look I was willing to do anything for the job. He was like, “I want to shoot it… and just cup the frame with your balls at the top.” I genuinely believed him and had to go to his trailer and say, “I dunno if I can do that…”

Was taking the film out ot Cannes a validation for you?
It’s amazing. I was so terrified to do it at the beginning and thought I was going to fuck it up and everyone’s going to say “Cronenberg’s sold out…” so to get it at Cannes is the coolest thing ever. Getting the movie, getting it to Cannes and getting the movie I got recently are three of the happiest moments of my life.

Speaking of the next movie…
I’m doing Mission: Blacklist with Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire who made Johnny Mad Dog. Hopefully that’ll shoot in Iraq, which will be fun. Then I’m doing Rover with [Animal Kingdom's] David Michôd.

And Breaking Dawn: Part 2 – what can fans expect?
It’s one of the funniest ones out of all of them. I think Bill [Condon, director] has really captured the absurdity of it.

Will it be a relief not to go back to being Edward Cullen?
A relief not to put the contact lenses in. It’s been absolutely awful having those stupid things in my eyes. Even if they said, “We’ll give you a billion dollars to do ti again,” I don’t now that I’d want to!
