Grazie al suo ruolo di ‘vegetariano’ vampiro Edward Cullen nella saga di Twilight, Robert Pattinson è oggi una delle più grandi stelle del pianeta. Ma proprio per questo ha quasi rifiutato il suo ultimo ruolo in Cosmopolis di David Cronenberg.

“Ero un po ‘ con i nervi tesi e mi ha spaventato perché stavo girando l’ultimo film di Twilight, quando mi è stato offerto,” dice. “Ero molto consapevole, pensando ‘Ugh, io troppo ovunque ,sono ipersaturato nella mia presenza’”, dice il 26-year-old, togliendosi uno stuzzicadenti dalla sua bocca – ha recentemente smesso di fumare.

“Volevo davvero fare le cose piccole e poi è arrivato questo, dove sono sempre con la mia faccia in ogni scena,parlo tutto il tempo. Ma c’era qualcosa per cui ho pensato che era incredibile ed era un film di David anchee, quindi non ho potuto dire di no a tutto questo”.

Nel film, Pattinson interpreta il miliardario 28enne Eric Packer, che è determinato a farsi trasportare per New York nella sua limousine stravagante per dare un taglio ai capelli, anche se la città è in subbuglio aggravata da una visita del Presidente della Stati Uniti.

Mentre il giorno passa, la rivolta selvaggia scoppia per le strade, mentre Packer assiste impotente mentre il suo impero crolla. La sua paranoia crescente lo porta a mettere insieme gli indizi di un segreto più terribile: il suo assassinio imminente.

E ‘un viaggio viscerale per il pubblico delle sale. Il dialogo è quasi poetico e la maggior parte delle scene si svolgono nella limousine di Packer.

Come all’interno di un bozzolo, conduce incontri di lavoro, incontra amanti, mangia, beve, urina e ha anche il suo quotidiano check-up da un medico.

Ma non era il sesso o violenza o anche una certa scena medica che ha spaventato Pattinson. “La parte più difficile è stato sola il primo giorno,” dice.

“L’unica cosa che non sapevo bene come fare, anche quando abbiamo iniziato le riprese, è stato dire la prima battuta, che è ‘Voglio un taglio di capelli’”.

Ridendo nervosamente, dice: “Io continuo a pensare che è la mia peggiore prestazione quella battuta in tutto il film.”

Lungi dal sentirsi imbarazzato dalla scena in cui si è sottoposto ad un esame della prostata – mentre seduce il suo consulente finanziario – Pattinson dice di essere stato entusiasta.

“Voglio dire, stavo facendo una scena che si sa non è mai stata fatta prima e che mai sarà fatta di nuovo”, dice ridendo

THANKS to his role as ‘vegetarian’ vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, Robert Pattinson is now one of the biggest stars on the planet. But for that very reason he nearly turned down his latest role in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.

“It was a little nerve-racking and it scared me because I was shooting the last Twilight movie when I got offered it,” he says. “I was really self-conscious, thinking ‘Ugh, I’m just so over-saturated everywhere’,” says the 26-year-old, taking a cocktail stick out of his mouth – he recently gave up smoking.

“I really wanted to do ensemble things and then this comes along, which is so in your face – I’m speaking all the time. But there was something about it which I thought was amazing and it was David as well, so I couldn’t really say no to it.”

In the movie, Pattinson plays 28-year-old billionaire Eric Packer, who is determined to be chauffeured across New York City in his extravagant limousine to get a haircut, even though the city is in turmoil compounded by a visit from the President of the United States.

As the day goes by, wild activity erupts on the streets while Packer watches helplessly as his empire collapses. His growing paranoia leads him to piece together clues to a most terrifying secret: his imminent assassination.

It’s a visceral trip for cinema-goers. Dialogue is almost poetic and the majority of scenes take place in Packer’s limousine.

Cocooned within, he conducts business meetings, meets lovers, eats, drinks, urinates and even has his daily check-up by a doctor.

But it wasn’t the sex or violence or even a certain probing scene that fazed Pattinson. “The toughest part was just the first day,” he says.

“The only thing I didn’t really know how to do, even when we started shooting, was say the first line, which is ‘I want a haircut’.”

Laughing nervously, he says, “I still think it’s the worst delivery in the whole movie.”

Far from feeling embarrassed by the scene in which he undergoes a prostate examination – while seducing his financial advisor – Pattinson says he was excited about it.

“I mean it’s doing a scene that you know has never been done before and is never going to be done again,” he laughs
