Una curiosità: Robert ha scritto una sceneggiatura per Money di Martin Amis/ Rob wrote a screenplay for Martin Amis’ ‘Money’

Che Robert Pattinson volesse fare lo sceneggiatore è cosa abbastanza nota. Lo disse una prima volta a Vanity Fair America nell’Aprile 2011, e in seguito è riemerso in varie interviste successive. Che Robert Pattinson abbia una passione per la letteratura di Martin Amis e per il suo romanzo Money è cosa altrettanto nota.

Ma durante la campagna pubblicitaria per Water for Elephants, in un’intervista, tra le tantissime rilasciate da Pattinson ce n’è una con  Chris Ayres di The Sunday Times of London in cui Rob ha raccontato di avere scritto una sceneggiatura di suo pugno proprio per Money di Amis. Ma è arrivato fuori tempo massimo, perchè una versione del libro è stata già realizzata di recente dalla BBC . Rob al proposito ha detto:

” Volevo farne un film da così tanto tempo”, sospira l’attore.”Finalmente ho avuto la struttura perfetta per  farlo , poi improvvisamente è uscito  e ho pensato: ‘Perché?! Perché proprio adesso?’  E dire che mi ero infornato e non lo sapevo”

“La cosa è, non è possibile farlo esattamente uguale al testo , questo è quello che [la versione BBC]  è sembrato essere (quando  è uscito). Il punto è la scrittura, e devi trovare un modo per tradurlo in film. Sarebbe ad esempio un film incredibile, però. Il dialogo è tutto lì. ”

Pattinson prosegue: “Era assolutamente una gran cosa negli anni 80 (il libro di Amis), e puoi crederci completamente, quando infatti incontri dei produttori che erano importanti in quella decade, questi si comportano ancora come allora. Ma al giorno d’oggi sono diventati molto più sofisticati  anche nelle loro merd…te”

Pattinson is under no illusions about the brutal economics (not to mention politics) of Hollywood, in particular the fact he must do big studio films to win the freedom for smaller, artier roles. “As with theatre in London, there’s an accepted protocol, and if you start screwing with it – if you don’t kiss certain arses and stuff – it comes back to bite you, and it’s quite difficult to keep working,” he muses.

Ayres  aggiunge: Pattinson non si illude rispetto alle economie brutali (per non menzionare il fattore politico) di Hollywood, in particolare pensa di dovere fare film di grandi studi cinematografici per poter avere la libertà di poter fare cose più piccole, e ruoli più artistici. “Come per il teatro a Londra, c’è un protocollo accettato da tutti, e se vai contro quelle regole, se non fai il leccacu.. con certe persone o noi fai certe cose, vai a perderci, e diventa piuttosto difficile continuare a lavorare”, conclude Pattinson.

IIn the meantime, Pattinson has been writing his own screenplay – an adaptation of the politically incorrect Martin Amis novel Money about a chronically overweight, lecherous, hamburger-addicted director of 1980s fast-food advertisements who tries to break into Hollywood. The only problem: BBC Two debuted its own poorly received version of the cult book last year.

“I’ve wanted to make it into a movie for so long,” sighs the actor. “I finally got the perfect little structure for it, then it suddenly came out, and I was like, ‘Why?! Why now?!’ I’ve been shopping it around, not that anything’s come of it yet.

“The thing is, you can’t do it as just the story, that’s what [the BBC version] seemed like. The whole point is the writing, and you’ve got to find a way to translate that into film. It would be such an amazing movie, though. The dialogue is all there.”

As for Amis’s scathing portrayal of Hollywood excess – the British novelist worked briefly as a screenwriter in 1980, providing the script to the awful sci-fi drama Saturn 3 starring Kirk Douglas and the late Farrah Fawcett – Pattinson says, “That was definitely a thing in the 1980s, you can completely believe it. In fact, when you meet producers who were big in that decade, they still behave like that. But nowadays they’ve become quite sophisticated in their bulls**t.”

    Sapere che questo libro gli piace cosi’ tanto, mi ha incuriosito. Quindi ho iniziato a leggerlo.

    Io l’ho letto a suo tempo, non appena Lui lo menzionò nell’intervista. In seguito ho letto anche gli altri di Amis.
    E’ da un po’ che Rob non ci dà consigli di lettura … qualche giornalista dovrebbe chiedergli cosa sta leggendo …
    Sarebbe stato bello vedere la sua sceneggiatura diventare film …
